Chandigarh: Most of the local bank branches in the city closed their gates for the people much before 6 pm. The banks on Wednesday had announced that they will increase two hours in their working hours.
Many small branches in the peripheral area like Raipur kalan, Mauli Jagran and other village branches had no other option but to shut their gates as they went short of cash. “Today, we deposited Rs 40 Lakh. We do not have enough cash for the people coming to our branch,” said Ritu, Bank Manager, State Bank of Patiala, Raipur Kalan.
Even in the main shopping areas of Sector-27 and Sector-19 same problem was faced by people. “I have been hearing in the news that the banks will be open till 6 pm but it is not even 5 pm and they have stopped changing currency, “ said Arvind Yadav, customer at Oriental Bank of Commerce, Sector-27C.
Even after promises made by State Bank Of India and Canara Bank to remain open till 6 pm, banks small branches had to close down due to shortage of cash to exchange the large deposit coming in the banks. The only branch which remained unaffected by the problem were main branches of the nationalised and small branches of private banks like Kotak Mahindra, Yes Bank etc.
People had to suffer because of the laxity of banks as many public branches commenced work after 10 am despite RBI directions to open at 8 am. Similarly ICICI bank phase 7 declared customers that they don’t have more currency in their branch around 12:30 pm and as a result people had to rush to other branches.
