Chandigarh: Women between 18 and 30 years of age are most prone to criminals assaulting them sexually as they are the vulnerable targets in the crime-prone city if the trend is any indication. According to an official data of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 72 rape cases were reported in Chandigarh in 2015, and among them 28 victims were between age of 18 and 30 years.
The data of NCRB revealed that 18 girls who became victims of rape were between the age of16 and 18 years, 12 minors were between the age of 12 and 16 years, nine girls were between the age of 6 and 12 years, two girls were below the age of 6 years and two women were above the age group of above 60 years.
The NCRB data shows that apart from the 72 rape cases registered in Chandigarh, there were six cases of attempt to rape. The police have also registered 22 cases of sexual harassment, 165 cases were of kidnappings and abductions, 102 cases of molestation and obscene acts with an intention to outrage their modesty in 2015. Meanwhile, till September 2 this year, more than 58 women and girls have been reportedly abducted who were below 18-year-old and above 18-year-old, while a total 39 rape cases with girls have also been registered. As many as 18 cases registered under Protection of Child from Sexual Offence Act 2012 are also added in the list.
In 2016, among the 39 cases of rapes registered by the Chandigarh Police, 15 were minors whereas 24 were major.
