Chandigarh: Chandigarh Youth Congress staged a protest against the hike in fares (on flexi bases) of AC I and AC II classes of Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains, in front of the Chandigarh Railway Station. The protesters were led by president Chandigarh Congress Pardeep Chhabra.
Around 30 protestors raised slogans for over an hour in the parking area of the railway station. They raised slogans asking to take the hike back. The protest was not met with much support from the denziens.
President Chandigarh Congress said that this is a direct attack on the middle class. “People will have to pay fares as high as that of air travel. They will switch from railways to air lines,” he said.
The government raised railway fare for passengers travelling in AC II and AC II classes by Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains. The passengers will have to shell out between 10 and 50 per cent more under a dynamic surge pricing system to be introduced from Friday. “We were in government for 10 years but such an increase was never seen,” said Paradeep Chabra. The protesters have demanded an immediate withdrawal of the government’s notification.. Chhabra alleged that Modi’s model of governance is to “loot from the common man and give relief to his industrialist friends.”
He added that the speed of the train may increase or not, but Modi has put the fares on the fast track.
