Five years after the court, in the want of police challan, discharged Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim from a case of blasphemy registered against him in 2007, some Sikh organisations have now appealed to the chief minister to get the case reopened for trial. Notably, Ram Rahim is now behind the bars after as CBI court has convicted him rape as well as murder cases. He was accused of imitating the tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh in 2007, during a congregation of his sect held at Salabatpura in Bathinda district. Following violence between Sikhs and dera followers, a criminal case against the sect head was registered for hurting sentiments of Sikh populace in Bathinda in 2007.
Delaying the investigation, finally in 2012 Bathinda Police filed an FIR cancellation report in the court, submitting a letter from the complainant that he wasn’t the witness to the incident. The complainant had then challenged the Police act, stating that the letter was not signed by him. Amid the controversy, two years later the dera head tendered an application in the court, near the Lok Sabha polls, that he should be discharged from the allegation as the police failed to file the challan against him in the stipulated time frame, following which the court accepted his application.
