DP CORRESPONDENT Shimla:The 108-ambulance services have handled and successfully helped in the delivery of 10,000 babies assisted by our Emergency Management Technicians (EMTs) in Himachal Pradesh. Himachal launched the 108-emergency services on Dec 25, 2010 and the milestone is achieved on March 28 this year.
This way, one baby was with the assistance EMT every 8th hour in the state. According to Mehul Sukumaran, State Head, GVK EMRI, Himachal Pradesh, a total of 11,92,321 emergencies apart from 11,57,017 medical emergencies, 28,224 police related emergencies & 7,080 fire emergencies have been handled by the 108-National Ambulance Service (NAS) since its launch in the state. Pregnancy related emergencies during the same period totals to 2,38,046 which constituted to 20 pc of the total emergencies handled by 108 NAS of which 10,000 babies’ births are assisted by our Emergency Management Technicians (EMTs) in Himachal Pradesh.
The highest numbers of pregnancy related emergencies have been handled in the district Kangra (42,273) followed by Mandi (33,994) & then Sirmaur (30,231) while the lowest have been in the tribal district of Kinnaur (1,691) followed by Lahaul & Spiti (440).Of the total deliveries assisted by 108 NAS, 66 pc of births have been assisted inside the ambulance while carrying the patient from Home to a hospital while 34% of births have been assisted at the scene or home of the patient. Out of total deliveries assisted by 108 NAS, 48 pc newborns are male child and 52 pc newborns are female child.
