Like Multi National Companies (MNCs), the state government has also started giving targets to its officials for giving maximum employment to laborers under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). The target given by government has left the Block Development and Panchayat Officers (BDPOs) in a fix. The Panchayat officials maintained that MNREGA is demand based scheme but government and top officials assign them target for giving employment to laborers. The government also prepares chargesheet of the officials who didn’t comply with the target of government. Talking to Daily Post, Dhanwant Singh Randhawa, Vice president of Association of Block Development and Panchayat officials said that they provide employment to laborers according to demand but the government wanted to give forcible employment to achieve targets. Giving reference of Block 2 of Ludhiana, BDPO Randhawan said that there are 260 Panchayats in block and as per target of government more than two thousand workers should be given employment under MNREGA scheme. The government wants employment to atleast 12 people in each village. The members of BDPO association who held a meeting in Ludhiana to discuss their problems said that in Ludhiana district which covers majority of urban areas, the laborers avoid taking employment under MNREGA. Under the government scheme, laborers get RS 235 daily but the laborers get RS 500 wages at private places. However the government wanted the officials to give forcible employment to laborers. BDPO Dhanwant Singh Randhawa said that due to less wages under government scheme in comparison with wages at private places, they get labors above the age of 50 who didn’t perform their duty well. BDPO association Punjab said that if they don’t give forcible employment the government prepares chargesheet against officials which become hurdle in promotion and annual increment. President of BDPO Association Sukhchain Singh said that if government will not address their grievances they will resort to agitation or other options.
