Army Chief General Bipin Rawat defended the use of the Human Shield by the Army. Rawat said – when the stones and petrol bombs are being thrown in this dirty battle, then I can not say to my soldiers that ‘wait and die. Rules of war are there, where the enemy attack face to face ‘. it is mentionable here that in order to get out of the crowds during the Bypoll on 9th April in Srinagar, Major Gogoi ordered a Kashmiri person to be tied as a human shield before the jeep. Many leaders, including Omar Abdullah, had also opposed. But, Army Chief given Gogoi a Commendation Card.Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat has said, the Indian Army is facing a dirty war in Jammu and Kashmir which has to be fought through innovative ways.He stoutly defended the use of a Kashmiri as a human shield by a young officer. Mr. Rawat said, though a Court of Inquiry was finalising its probe into the incident, the main objective of awarding the officer, Major Leetul Gogoi was to boost the morale of young officers of the force.Talking about the complexity of the security challenge in the state, he suggested it would have been easier for the armed forces if the protesters were firing weapons instead of throwing stones.
