The primary objective of every public as well as private organization is profit earning but stress on employees is a major factor always ignored. Though these organizations are service-oriented but profit earning stands as a major motive. Productivity stands a major entity in the growth of every organization but the quality of service and productivity depends on the attitude of the employees. More productivity and performance from the employees will definitely get translated into heavy profits is what they believe in. Can only hard work help achieve this aim?
Excess hard work results in stress. This stress ultimately leads to more work hours but less efficiency and thus loss in productivity. It is harmful in the long run. The latest estimates of Labour Force Survey (LFS) show that cases of work related stress, depression or anxiety in 2014-15 was 440,000 cases, thus giving a prevalence rate of 1380 per 100,000 workers. The
number of new cases was 234,000, an incidence rate of 740 per 100,000 workers. The estimated number and rate have remained broadly flat for more than a decade. The total number of working days lost due to this condition in 2014-15 was 9.9 million days. Equated it comes to an average of 23 days lost per case. In 2014-15 stress accounted for 35 per cent of all work related ill-health cases and 43 per cent of all working days lost due to ill health.
When a worker is not happy at his workplace work does not give him satisfaction. It is either due to his innovativeness being ignored, he is under paid, he is having disharmonious relations with co workers or monotony at work even after the workplace having proper facilities. This perhaps leads to a void or stressful environment at the workplace as there is no fun and positivity at all.
How important is the role of recreation at work place? Fun means lightening the mood of employees. How many organizations today are giving a vent to the growth of this concept? Some traditional units in developing countries of course are not following the concept of fun. There is excess of competition and all want to beat others by giving more production or by getting maximum out of minimum work force. They aim at cutting the production cost for gaining maximum profits. With technically equipped work force available in excess they are least concerned about the conditions or environment being given to the employees.
Yelp, a company having work houses in London and San Francisco helps its customers find amazing hot spots, events, and hidden gems wherever they might be. Yelp office employees always have travel and exploration to new places as their work buster. They believe that the office might be where things get done, but it’s also where co-workers build friendships and plan for recreation trips together.
Another example is of Livefyre in San Francisco having a cool work force. The employees at Livefyre enjoy working in company to help people around the world connect on the web. Yoga sessions and in-house dance nights add fun to work for them. Many organizations keep their doors shut for new idea of giving stress busters to the employees just because the brains running the organization might have done the work in a traditional way keeping work and play separately forgetting that all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.
According to them fun would distract the work force from meeting their objectives within the right time frame and this will lead to loss to the organization. According to theory X by Douglas McGregor people dislike work and they will not give their full until they are threatened or stringently supervised. This theory has ruled the work places across the world for several centuries but today the scenario is changing due to several work and family related constraints.
Whereas theory Y by Douglas McGregor promotes self motivation at work places. Self motivation is possible only if the worker finds right environment and recreation facilities at the workplace. It is being richly appreciated by the new world technology giants like Google, Infosys and others. Most of the appreciation is coming from the human resource available that is giving more efficiency due to flexible work hours and conducive environment for growth of not only their mental faculties but their physical well being as well. Supervision at work places was minimized to give motivation and sense of trust to the employees.
Introduction of gymnasiums, swimming pools and tennis grounds at work places seemed quite out of place in the past but today in this changed world we find these facilities available at the work place itself. Those units working 24 hours have lavish canteens for the employees where they find food of their choice besides working conditions all around the campus. They believe that no fun at workplace may affect productivity and performance of the employee.
Can we imagine a worker writhing to get food saying I could not work to give my best in such unfriendly work environment and he needs to get out as soon as possible? So, if you want to make your work experience better you should try to have a good work environment. Maintaining a balance between work and personal life is very important. As essentially you can’t ignore work similarly you shouldn’t ignore your family. Such balance will give much required job satisfaction as one will feel that he is not overlooking the other areas of his life. When employees are able to fulfill their various needs and goals in life, they feel more confident about themselves and perform best at work.
Theory X says that ‘Good’ employees or workers are often defined as those who put in loads of effort and sacrifice their personal time in order to perform well in their work. Some employees are simply over attached to work and ignore their other responsibilities. They neglect other aspects of their life for work. But is this justified?
Owners of big organizations have a responsibility to show that unbalanced approach is not right. By rewarding employees who maintain good work-life balance habits and can still perform well will set a healthy trend for a prosperous work place. There is a need for the team members to realize that they’re working towards a common goal.
