Active in the RSS since his childhood, Tarun Chugh, a BJP candidate from Amritsar Central assembly constituency, enjoys his closeness with party president Amit Shah and senior party leader as well as Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
Holding a MBA degree (as per Election commission records) from Mahatma Gandhi University Meghalaya, Chugh is contesting his second Vidhan Sabha election from here. in 2012, he had lost to Om Prakash Soni, a Congress candidate, with a huge margin of 12,793 votes.
This time he will face Dr Ajay Gupta of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who is a MBBS qualified doctor, from this seat.
The Congress has fielded sitting MLA Om Parkash Soni from this constituency.
In 2015, Chugh landed into controversy when Congress and the SAD, BJP’s alliance partner had objected the inscription of national BJP secretary and a losing MLA Tarun Chugh’s name on foundation stones of various development works in Amritsar.
Chugh started his career with the RSS and served as various capacities in the Sangh during his college time. He entered mainstream politics in 1994 through the ABVP. He became president of the BJYM, Punjab and a member of its national executive in 1998.
In 2013, Chugh was appointed as BJP state general secretary. He was also the zonal Parbhari (convener) for Doaba region and was appointed as BJP coordinator for election rallies in Punjab.
He has also worked as election incharge in Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. A businessman by profession, Chugh owns a Medicine Agency, Railway Booking Agency and also is a partner with his spouse in company trading in cloth and equity shares.
