Ludhiana: The action has been finally taken in the Jhelum Express derailment incident by the Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozepur Division, Anuj Parkash after getting report from a three member Baroda House inquiry team in the second week of February by giving warning letter to railway officials held responsible for incident.
As the confidential letter number 113T/D-3/2/16.Pt-1 dated February 17, 2017 was issued by DRM/FZR to the DS Sidhu ADEN/LDH, warning him to be careful in the future and ensure proper maintenance of track and P-Way assets under his jurisdiction otherwise action would be taken in future. Earlier, just after few days of incident, Senior Section Engineer (SSE) P-way (permanent way) Ludhiana, Vivek Kumar, SSE P-way (ultra sonic flaw detecting) officer Jalandhar Manish Kumar and Senior Divisional Engineer 1 Ferozepur, SPS Batra were suspended on orders of General Manager Northern Railways, AK Puthia based on the preliminary investigations, in which they were found guilty of negligence for the Jhelum Express incident.
However, the reliable sources at Ludhiana Railway Station alleged that the action taken in this incidents’ investigation report is just mere an eye wash as it was a very fatal incident. Only with gods’ grace, no death was reported due to timely alertness of the driver otherwise it could have claimed many lives in the accident. The decision of the warning was taken by five member inquiry committee constituted to carry out the investigations in the last five months.
The inquiry committee meeting said that the incident took place due to the sudden rail track fracture of 25 per cent fatigue defect. The rail was badly scabbed at multiple locations and had completed its service life.10 coaches B-5, S-1 to S-8 and pantery car of the train number 11078 Dn derailed at KM- 387 / 7 between Phillaur and Ladhowal Block section of the Sahnewal- Amritsar section. No causalty was there in the accident and three persons simply injured.
It is pertinent to mention that in the wee hours of the day, around 3:10 am, ten coaches of Jammu Tawi-Pune Jhelum Express were derailed near 50 meters short of a bridge over the Sutlej River at Ladhowal around Phillaur. The derailment of the train disrupted whole railway networking as around 81 trains were cancelled in region till the filing of the report. The police, railway and senior officials of the administration were also on their toes and rushed to the spot.
The General Manager of Northern Railways AK Puthia also reached the spot later from New Delhi at the site of the incident. In the early morning, emergency hooters were blown to move the Accident Relief Train Crane. Just in the duration of 20 minutes the ART Crane moved from Ludhiana with a team of special doctors to deal with the tragedy. A team of doctors from Ludhiana after giving them first aid they sent them to nearby hospitals in the Ludhiana city.
