Whenever great Indian love stories are talked of, the one of Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam is always mentioned. He was a great lyricist and she was a celebrated poet, and what connected both of them so deeply was the intensity of their words, emotions and sufferings.
And, Chandigarh folks lived through the same emotions on Friday evening, when a play titled Ek Mulaqat was staged at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18, Chandigarh. Written and directed by Saif Hyder Hasan, the play features Shekhar Suman as Sahir and Deepti Naval as Amrita. During a press meet prior to the play, we had an interaction with the actors and director Saif. There, they shared about their interpretations of Sahir and Amrita’s love story, the one which was not ‘happily ever after’ sorts.
No doubt their words reflect a lot about their love story, but not much has been written about the same. Hence, director Saif shares, “Facts and fiction have been merged in this story because there are various interpretations of the chemistry that both of them shared.”
But, what is your interpretation of their love, we ask the team? Here, Shekhar quips, “Sahir was a shy man, who was afraid of commitments,” and, “Amrita was a norm breaker, a soul that was impossible to confine,” joins Deepti.
Both the actors feel fortunate to have been offered these roles as they relatively believe, “Both Sahir and Amrita’s life was full of emotions and rich aesthetically. Who would have said no to doing this play especially, the one who know what true love means?”
As a lot of content is inspired from Sahir and Amrita poetry, the play too has long poetic conversation, both in Punjabi and Urdu.
Further, Deepti shares that though she was shy of doing theatre, portraying Amrita’s character brought an ease to her.
“I started my theatre journey with this play. Earlier, I was scared and shy to act on stage. However, I could do this one with ease because I knew Amrita personally. I was in touch with her till her last breath. So, she and her stories are always alive in my mind,” recalls Deepti.
On the other hand, Shekhar unfortunately couldn’t have the chance to meet Sahir personally.
“But, I know many people who were close to Sahir and so, interacting with them gave me an understanding of his character,” he shares.
Yet for Shekhar, Sahir’s life was a mystery and to be able to know it completely is not easy.
Ek Mulaqat has been staged at various platforms in India as well as abroad, and director Saif feels proud that irrespective of the language barriers, audience have always connected with the intense love saga of Sahir and Amrita.
