In a release issued here the foundation debunked the myth that “70% of youth of Punjab is drug addict”. But there is a huge difference in this line and the line “70% of drug addicts are youth”, it said.
The release further said that drug menace in Punjab could be traced back to early 1960s with the advent of green revolution which bought more laborers especially from outside and due to that their demand for poppy husk and opium increased manifold. Even most of the truck drivers felt that it helped them in long driving.
Then addicts shifted from poppy husk to synthetic drugs which rang alarming bells in the country. The Punjab border was unfenced, so there was very heavy inflow of heroin into the country and India became biggest market. Punjab suffered being the entry point.
India is also sandwiched between two triangles- Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand AND Pakistan , Afghanistan and Iran, so India is certainly a victim of that.
The release posed a question regarding “Why youth of Punjab state taking drugs which has produced number of Olympians and Defense personnel?”
There are many reasons for this. The main reason is lack of proper education and awareness in remote areas and the consequent lack of employment. Then there is the issue of easy availability of drugs that too at relatively cheap prices.
The foundation has started a massive home to home sensitization program. Our trained community counselors are motivating people for acceptance of problem and to come forward for treatment.
There is already an OPD facility since February 2016, counseling services since May 2016 and the IPD facility would be in place by October 2016.
Fateh Foundation is also implementing Skill Development programs in 20 various skills which will be available to all free of cost, the victims of drug abuse and their family members.
The above initiative was being supported by Dorf Ketal Group, Mumbai, the release said.
