Jalandhar: ‘Vahan Operation Project’ has brought a sea change in the traditional policing in Punjab Police. Briefing the media on the success story of the project, Jalandhar Range IG Lok Nath Angra said that Vahan Operation has helped Punjab police solve numerous cases of snatching, NDPS and theft in 6 districts of Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, SBS Nagar and Khanna. The project was started by DGP Suresh Arora in December 2015. He said that the DGP Punjab was all set to expand the project through public and media.
Under the project, till date 1,22,689 vehicles had been checked. Of these 70 vehicles were found bearing fake registrations and 350 were impounded due to various reasons. 19 criminal cases were solved through these seizures. The seized vehicles were having a value of Rs. 1.5 Crores and included Boleros, Innovas, Safari and Torex. The project has made the communication regarding vehicles live and fast. Citizens are just required to write a text message containing the word Vahan followed by space and then registration number of vehicle in continuation in capital letters and send the same to 07738299899. He or she immediately gets a message containing owner’s name, address and vehicle make.
Angra told media persons that 37 police officials participated actively and 24 accused were arrested . “Please spread this message that public should know about this number to find out the owner and other details ” Angra said. IG Angra gave Class 1 Certificates to the 37 cops from 6 distts. who worked on this project and successfully nabbed accused in cases of drugs and snatching.”This project has improved our efficiency as energy,manpower and time of police is saved considerably and resources can be used elsewhere ” IG Angra told the journalists.
