Indo-Pak relation has always been a subject of conflict. Various writers and filmmakers have depicted various stories based on this subject. While some narrated the life beyond border, others relatively showcased the waves of enmity.
But the interactions with commoners from both sides always reflect mixed emotions. The ones who have seen the partition time definitely miss the other part of the land.
According to screenplay writer Shagufta Rafique, her mother, who hailed from Gujranwala (Pakistan) and shifted to Mumbai after partition, used to miss her place more than anything. From her mother’s language accent to her way of living, everything reflected the touch of place that was left behind after partition.
And that’s what has inspired Shagufta to write and direct Dushman, an upcoming Punjabi film which depicts Indo-Pak relationship from the viewpoint of two young men.
“One is an Indian, other comes from Pakistan and they both live abroad. Because of obvious reasons or no reasons otherwise, they hate each other,” says Shagufta, who was in Chandigarh on Wednesday to talk about his debut directorial venture.
Ace filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt also accompanied Shagufta and film’s star-cast including actors Kartar Cheema, Jashan Singh and Sakshi Gulati.
Not talking much about the film, Bhatt says that the spirit of humanity is same at both sides of Indo-Pak border and hence, “Dushman is a story of humans in the language of humanity.”
On why Shagufta chose to make the film in Punjabi, she says, “I believe that North India and especially Punjab has majorly witnessed the sorrow of partition. As I said, I have heard the stories of Pakistan from my mother and she spoke Punjabi. So, this film fits in Punjab the most.”
While Kartar Cheema will play the character of Pakistani guy, Jashan plays the one who comes from India. Also, debutant actress Sakshi Gulati is playing a bar dancer in the film. The story will unfold the incidents with which the hatred feelings turn into the wave of friendship. Dushman is hitting theatres on March 3.
