Gurdaspur: In an era when the ostentatious Punjabi weddings have become a norm in Punjabi society in the state and elsewhere, here was a wedding that was simple yet beautiful, low cost yet high in self-esteem, and above all a practical example of the way weddings ought to be conducted as per the teachings of Sikh Gurus.
It took an Army man to cock a snook at the prevalent social mores to stick to the old and forgotten, but still very relevant and real, values of the Punjabi culture. Gurpreet Singh of village Villa Teja, posted in 8 Assam Rifles, simply rode to his bride’s village on his bike, conducted a simple marriage in the local Gurudwara, and the newly married couple rode back to his village on the same bike.
The bride wore the minimum of jewellery but all the same looked beautiful and radiant, taking the pheras with grace and diginity secure in the knowledge that she was part of something that would help set an example in the society for others to follow.
