Chandigarh: The bollywood movie Udta Punjab triggers the debate among the political parties in Punjab as the movie was based on the Punjab’s youth. However, congress and AAP leaders accused SAD-BJP ruling government for putting the ban on movie. They said that the real reason behind the ban is completely political. Some of the news organizations carried the versions of leaders regarding the ban on movie, a comedian turned AAP leader Gurpreet Singh Guggi said while talking to a news portal that SAD is an alliance partner of Modi government, taking the benefit their alliance akalis exercised their influence over banning the movie.
After reviewing the comments of political leaders over the ban on Udta Punjab, Co- Producer of the film, Anurag Kashyap requested the political parties to stay away from this controversy. Spreading the message through social media, Kashyap on his twitter said, “I request Congress, AAP and other political parties to stay out of my battle. It’s my rights vs the censorship. I speak only on my behalf.” He added, “Please don’t color my fight with any political affiliation because there is none.”
On June 6, the makers of Bollywood film were said to have been asked by the Revising Committee of the censor board to remove all references to Punjab — a decision perhaps taken under pressure from the ruling dispensation in the state which is dealing with a festering problem of drugs. “Udta Punjab”, a Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh starrer movie, delves into how the youth there have succumbed to drugs.
The release of the movie in a year when the state is less than nine months from assembly elections is likely to be seen as politically disastrous for the state’s ruling party, the Shrimoni Akali Dal which is a partner with the ruling-National Democratic Alliance at the centre. Earlier, there was buzz that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had refused a release certificate for the Abhishek Chaubey directed movie, but later the makers had clarified that no ban was imposed on it.
