Samana: Manjit Singh, a debt-ridden young farmer from village Kotla Nasru in Samana sub-division committed suicide in the night intervening Monday and Tuesday after consuming some poisonous substance.The police has registered a case in this connection and further investigation is on.
According to the police the family members of Manjit Singh brought him in a semi conscious condition to the civil hospital, Samana for treatment. The doctors referred him to the government Rajindra hospital, Patiala after giving him emergency treatment. Manjit Singh, however, failed to survive.
Kirpal Kaur, mother of the deceased, told Daily Post on Tuesday evening that Manjit Singh’s father Bhajan Singh had died a long ago and the family was owned one and half acres of agricultural land in the village. She said that the family found it difficult to make ends meet from the agriculture income.
She said that Manjit Singh had opted to borrow money from Aarhtiyas and also from the banks but later failed to return the borrowed money, which had increased due to the interest accrued.
She said that as the debt started increasing Manjit Singh got upset and talked about committing suicide many times. Kirpal Kaur added that every time the family stopped him from doing so and assured him that the whole family would unitedly pay back this debt.
With misty eyes, the mother of the deceased said that last night Manjit Singh consumed any poisonous substances to commit suicide and the family came to know only when his condition turned critical.
