Remember that moment when you spotted graffiti on a wall, and something about it made you think as to what it symbolised? Graffiti is an expression of revolution and strokes of paint reveal a story in itself.
But why graffitis only deserve an abandoned wall? Why don’t they reach houses? On the similar note, Sawan, a Mohali-based artist has painted graffiti on his own house.
Sawan, who is popularly known as Sawan Madman, is much fascinated by the works of the graffiti artist Bansky, whose work is strongly based on a satirical political theme.
Sawan, relates well to the happenings around the world, and shares his moment of inspiration when US President Donald Trump commented on building a wall to ban immigrants.
“By building walls they think they are creating borders, but for an artist that’s a canvas to paint on,” says Sawan, who titles his graffiti Create Art.
He strongly believes that an artist is always looking for a platform to express himself, and for him this painted wall is an attribute of self expression.
Create Art showcases the soldiers painting the portrait of Sawan in three different colours. He says, “If there were no wars, then soldiers will function creatively and for them making art will be a revolution.”
The 30-year-old artist resides with his family, and shares that they always have supported his creative endeavours. The localities have been turning their heads to his graffiti and giving feedbacks.
While an old lady in the neighborhood calls it, “Saari dewar da naas marta” (You’ve made a mess of this wall), on the other hand, the younger lot has been seen getting their pictures clicked and have approached Sawan to visit their residence to work on their walls as well.
Sawan laughs while sharing the feedback, and says, “It’s amazing to hear those comments. As an artist it’s my responsibility to add new colours to the society.”
In fact, this is not the first time Sawan has painted his own house. Before this, his older graffiti of Transformers became a landmark for the people in locality.
“A house is like a nest, you build it yourself. So we should put colours in our house the way we desire,” says Sawan and sings off.
