Education Secretary ordered to teach 50 words of English. Teaching English to school students continues to be a major challenge for the state government. In an initiative to improve the quality of education in government schools, Education Secretary Krishan Kumar recently ordered teachers of classes VI and VII to teach at least 50 new words of English to students every week.The target is higher for senior classes. Efforts are being made to promote English in government schools. Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh said that English would be introduced in class I in government schools. Education Minister Aruna Chaudhary announced that 400 primary schools would adopt English as medium of education.A former district education officer said that “How we can dream of teaching English when students of class X don’t even know how to write in their mother tongue? Till the system is not changed all such announcements will remain only on paper.”Teacher and experts say that the exercise won’t be fruitful without doing away with the system of not failing students till class X under the Right to Education Act. They opined that adequate teaching staff is needed across the state.
