Majitha will see a triangular contest with congress and aap seeking to end sad strangehold on the constituency
Majitha holds a distinguished place in Punjab’s history as renowned Majithias came from this region. Majitha is known as origin of Sikh warriors. Hari Singh Nalwa was the most celebrated general of the Sikh kingdom.
Located in Amritsar district of the state, Majitha is a stronghold of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), represented by former Youth Akali Dal chief Bikram Singh Majithia, who is a brother-in-law of Sukhbir Singh Badal, SAD president and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister.
The youngest minister in the Badal Cabinet, Bikram Singh Majithia will be trying his luck from the constituency for the third consecutive time. He contested 2007 and 2012 Vidhan Sabha election successfully and was a Cabinet minister for both the terms.
The constituency will see a triangular contest in the assembly elections as the SAD has pitched him as a party candidate from here for the third time. The Congress is yet to declare it candidates while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already nominated Himmat Singh Shergill against Majithia. The AAP and Congress are expected to give a tough competition to SAD here.
According to records, over 1,42,707 voters including 75,014 male and 67,695 female will decide the future of their next legislator in 2017 Vidhan Sabha elections scheduled for February 4.
Shiromani Akali Dal occupied the constituency after defeating Congress in 2007 and 1997 elections.
In 2002, Congress candidate Sawinder Singh defeated Raj Mohinder Singh while in 2012 an independent candidate Sukhjinder Pal Singh, who had contested in 2007 on Congress ticket, gave a tough fight to Bikram Singh Majithia.
