Chandigarh:In the final list of its candidates for Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections scheduled for February 4, the Congress nominated a turncoat for Amritsar South but denied ticket to senior party leader and former Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari.
Inderbir Singh Baloria, a sitting Akali MLA, from Amritsar South, has recently joined the Congress after quitting Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The Congress has fielded him against Gurpartap Singh Tikka, a SAD candidate. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already pitched Inderbir Singh Nijjer from this seat.
Denying ticket to Manish Tewari, who was keen to shift to Punjab politics from Delhi and was willing to contest from Ludhiana.
Tewari’s hopes to contest from Ludhiana East were on Tuesday dashed to grounds with the party fielding Sanjiv Kumar, a sitting councillor of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, from here.
Meanwhile, Dr Manju Bansal, wife of former Congress MLA Mangat Rai Bansal, is party’s choice from Mansa.
Interestingly, the Congress, out of five – Navjot Singh Sidhu, Pargat Singh, Inderbir Singh Baloria, Deepinder Singh Dhillon and Sarwan Singh Phillaur – prominent turncoats, has given tickets to first four while Phillaur has been accommodated in the party.
