Jalandhar: Amidst the soaring election fever, Doaba is witnessing ‘son rise’ in as many as five assembly constituencies including three reserve and two general seats in Assembly Elections scheduled for February 4.
As many as five senior leaders from Congress and BJP have fielded their sons in Doaba belt
Senior leaders from Congress and BJP were testing their luck with second and third generation in fray for polls on their home turfs. The sons of sitting MLAs or veteran leaders were carrying the family legacy ahead and seeking votes in the names of their father’s performance. While Congress has fielded green horn candidate ‘sons’ on four assembly seats namely Kartarpur, Phillaur, Nawanshahr and Jalandhar North. Former cabinet minister and senior BJP leader Chuni Lal Bhagat’s son Mohinder Bhagat is contesting election from Jalandhar West seat.
Jalandhar MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh’s son and former Punjab Youth Congress chief Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary has been fielded from Phillaur (reserve ). A first timer he is in fray from Phillaur, which has remained the strong hold of the ‘Chaudhary family’. Vikramjit is cashing on the work done by his father in the past and currently being Jalandhar MP in constituency.
Another ‘Chaudhary family’ son- Surinder Singh Chaudhary who is the cousin of Vikramjit Chaudhary was trying his luck for the first time from Kartarpur reserve seat.
The son of senior Congress leader and former minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, green horn candidate Surinder was riding high on the sympathy wave in name of his father. Chaudhary Jagjit died in the year 2015. Besides this, Surinder Chaudhary is also banking on his long stint as a sarpanch, block samiti president and then zila parishad chairman.
Even the Jalandhar (North) constituency which witnessed emotional ups and downs saw ‘son rise’, when an indecisive Congress finally allotted ticket to green horn candidate Bawa Henry.
The son of former cabinet minister Avtar Singh Henry, Bawa Henry was reaching out to the voters listing the development works done by his father and the emotional support. Notably, Bawa Henry landed on the political pitch after congress first announced ticket to Tajinder Singh Bittu and then to Raj Kumar Gupta.
Apart from Jalandhar, congress has also fielded Angad Saini, the son of sitting Nawanshahr MLA Guriqbal Kaur Babli from their home turf.
Angad Saini, who is merely 26 years old, is the second youngest candidate in fray after congress candidate Davinder Singh Ghubaya who is contesting from Fazilka. He is the son of sitting Ferozepur MP and Akali leader Sher Singh Ghubaya.
The BJP too is banking on Mohinder Lal Bhagat, the son of senior leader Bhagat Chuni Lal from the lone urban reserve seat of Jalandhar West seat. BJP is banking on Modi’s charisma at the centre and his recently held rally in Jalandhar.
