Patiala: Nabha Assembly constituency came into being in 1962 but has failed to get attention of the various state governments.
It lacks in the basic civic facilities like sewerage facility, potable water supply, good roads and a separate women’s college.
The Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had conducted the Sangat Darshan programme in the constituency just a few days ago to dole out funds in the shape of the developmental grants. But the voters are not satisfied and are demanding more funds. It is being alleged that the city was deliberately ignored by the SAD-BJP government as it had returned Congress MLA to the assembly.
Since Nabha’s carnation in 1962 this seat sent Congress’ MLA’s seven times in the state Vidhan Sabha, two times the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA and three times Independents won from this constituency.
Going by the caste base in the constituency, it has 35 per cent population of Scheduled Castes, 40 per cent of Sikhs and 25 per cent of Hindus. It’s having a total of 1,69,330 eligible voters out of these 89,558 are male and 79,772 female voters.
The constituency covers Nabha city with 23 municipal wards and is spread over 137 villages. It was declared as a reserved constituency in 2012 because of the increase in the Scheduled Castes population.
In 2012 Assembly election’s Congress’ candidate Sadhu Singh Dharamsot won the seat by a vote margin of over 23,000, defeating SAD candidate. But during the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Dr Dharamvira Gandhi took a lead of 52,187 votes and opened a new chapter. The Congress candidate Preneet Kaur who was contesting her third Parliamentary election in a row only got 37,690 votes.
Congress MLA Sadhu Singh Dharamsot claimed that this constituency had better days under the Congress regime.
The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) banked on halqa in-charge Makhan Singh Lalka but as the assembly elections approached near he changed horses. Kabir Dass, ex-deputy mayor of Patiala MC, and SAD candidate said that he was here to set the things in right. He arranged a Sangat Darshan programme of the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for this constituency area in which developmental grants worth several crore had been given for the area. He assured that he will work for the all-out development of area.
