A RSS product and three time MLA Tikshan Sud, a seasoned BJP leader, had made it in the first list of party candidates for Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections.
Sud will face his political rivals, Sunder Sham Arora, a Congress candidate and Paramjit Sachdeva, a candidate of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the sixth contest of his career from Hoshiarpur constituency on February 4.
A post graduate (MA in Political Science) from Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, Sud also did his LLB from PU. Apart from being active in politics, he also did practiced as an advocate for a long time.
Sud started nurturing the constituency (having Congress stronghold) since his college times and is the first BJP MLA who defeated Congress candidate Naresh Thakur with a huge margin of over 15,600 votes in 1997.
He retained the seat in 2002 after defeating Charanjit Singh Channi, a Congress candidate. During Congress government under Captain Amarinder Singh’s leadership, Sood remained leader of the Opposition.
During his tenures the SAD-BJP government inducted him as a Cabinet minister. He was given important portfolios like Labour, Local Bodies, Industry, Excise and Taxation, Forest and Wildlife, Medical Education and some others.
He remained in controversy after R R Kakkar, a Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Hoshiarpur, level corruption charges against him.
The then BJP national vice president and in-charge Punjab BJP unit, Shanta Kumar, however, gave a clean chit to Sud.
In 2012, Congress candidate Sunder Sharm Arora, a realtor, and new face of the party defeated Sud by over 6,000 votes.
