Son of a former IPS officer late Surinder Pal Singh Kang, the sitting Kharar MLA Jagmohan Singh Kang, who is said to be one of the close associates of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, with try his luck from Kharar assembly constituency again.
Congress’s tough man and seasoned leader Kang will face veteran journalist and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Kanwar Sandhu in the ensuing Vidhan Sabha election. The Shiromani Akali Dal has not fielded its candidate from the seat as yet. Sources, however, disclosed that Ranjit Gill, a realtor, is SAD choice from Kharar seat.
Kang in 2012 had landed in a controversy over illegal possession of village common land and forest land along with a number of high-ups and bureaucrats in the periphery of Chandigarh.
Kang belonged to a traditional Congress Jat Sikh family of Shahidgarh village in Fatehgarh Sahib district and having agriculturist background. He was associated with the Youth Congress and remained a various positions including Convener, Art and Culture Cell from 1976 to 1980. He was then appointed as Vice-President, Punjab Youth Congress, in 1982. From 1982 to1992, Kang was a Member Executive, Punjab Pradesh Congress (I).
In last consecutive five Vidhan Sabh elections, that he contested, Kang remained a winner thrice. He was inducted as Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Dairy Development, Sports, Youth Services and Tourism Minister, in Punjab government led by Captain Amarinder Singh in 2002, when he contested from Morinda seat.
After delimitation of constituencies, Kang successfully contested from Kharar seat in 2012 and defeated SAD candidate Ujagar Singh with a margin of 6,779 votes.
In 1992, Kang defeated Balbir Singh, a SBP candidate, from Morinda constituency with a margin of 415 votes. Then in the very next election Kang lost to SAD candidate Ravi Inder Singh with a huge margin of 4,835 votes. Bouncing back in 2002, Kang defeated SAD’s Ujagar Singh with 2,717 votes. In 2007, he lost to Ujagar Singh but yet again made his strong come back in 2012 defeating SAD candidate Ujagar Singh by 6,779 votes.
