Nawanshahr: Of the three assembly constituencies i.e. Balachaur, Nawanshahr and Banga , the former can be termed as poor cousin of the latter two as it lacks in civic amenities, education, health, agriculture and irrigation.
Chaudhary Nand Lal of SAD is winning from Balachaur segment from last four terms. Though Nand Lal is accessible, he failed to end the sufferings of residents in twenty years despite being Chief Parliamentary Secretary for nearly nine years in a stretch.
Important sectors like education and health are also in utter state of neglect as there is acute shortage of teachers and doctors in dispensaries. More and more people are falling prey to cancer in Tonsa area allegedly due to release of untreated effluents by factories into water.
Social activist Suresh Khepar alleges that corruption has given rise to unemployment and drug culture. Youngsters in age group of 15-30 year of age have already fallen prey to drugs.
“Stray animals are having a free run everywhere in the constituency on the roads, in the fields and in villages, thus leding to loss of lives in accidents,” laments Darshan Singh Mattoo, state president of Kandi Sangharsh Committee.
Kandi canal has not been dug up to satisfaction of the residents of area. “Instead of digging it up along the Shiwalik Hills, it has been laid in the plains with help of pipes leading to total destruction of entire project as bridges have already collapsed and pipes have broken, “ said Varinder Bajarh, a local social activist .
As far as Nawanshahr assembly segment is concerned, the area can be termed as “well-off”, thanks to the remittances sent by NRIs. However other than remittances, there is nothing that the segment can boast of.
Industry has failed to make any foothold in the segment due to the lack of rail connectivity in the area. Focal point presents a picture of neglect even after being set up decades ago.
Raman Bhucher, running his venture of plastic pipes at Focal Point has opined that unless the town gets better rail connectivity, this sector cannot flourish in this segment.
Providing skill-based education to the youth is another need of area residents in order to prevent them (youth) from falling into the trap of illegal travel agents. “Skilled youth can find employment for themselves abroad without falling into the trap of such agents,” opined a school teacher.
It is unemployment and drugs which rock Banga constituency. Drugs menace is so rampant in the area that there is not even a single locality in town which does not serve as a safe haven for drug-sellers and addicts.
Tungal Gate and Father Gate locality and Langeri village are particularly notorious for the drugs. “Banga can be a swarg (haven) if scourge of drugs is contained somehow,” opined Jatinder Kaur Moonga, District President of Mahila Youth Congress.
The constituency has otherwise access to basic civic amenities like sewerage, water, roads, schools and hospitals etc.
