Known for his music genius and knack of connecting with the masses, famous musician Rabbi Shergill has come up with his new song ‘Kuj gallan kaudian, kuj gallan fikiyan’ dedicated to the burning issue of farmers’ suicides in Punjab. A major crisis across the country, and Punjab in particular, Rabbi Shergill has not only sung and written this song but also documented the narrative of hapless families of farmers who committed suicide in the past some years. As was the subject, even the video was shot in black and white. The song was released on January 19. Talking exclusively to Daily Post over the phone from Delhi, Rabbi said, “It’s like you cannot help but notice an elephant in the room. I come from an agricultural family and could link with the problems of these farmer families who had leaking roofs and shaken foundations of houses.” Shergill said that he should have written this song a little earlier but he was glad that he did. The singer conducted research along with Ajay Vir Jakhar, who was Chairman of the Punjab State Farmers Commission. “I met those families in Sangrur whose breadwinners committed suicide owing to farm crisis and narrated their story through one liner video content.
The song also includes some verses from ‘Gurbani di Kunji’ written by Bhai Gurdas,” he said. Apart from his musical journey, Rabbi Shergill was also known for connecting with the masses through political parties. Earlier, he campaigned for AAP in the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and then the Congress in the assembly elections in 2017. When asked if he would like to join hands with the Congress, AAP, SAD and the BJP for the farmers’ suicides issue ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, he said, “I am willing to join the AIADMK and the CPI too, all I need is a platform to connect with the people. I am a non-partisan artiste and not connected with any political party. The governments are not going to solve farm crisis, the civil society will have to do something.” The musician pointed out that the previous SADBJP government put Punjab in a state of coma, as a result of which they were ousted.
