Now-a-days, lot of questions are being asked from Punjabi singers about their choice of songs. For instance, why Punjabi songs are only focusing on party, fun and relationships? While some of the singers, in reply to such questions, make promises to come up with something new next time, there are many others who are very straight forward with their views. Punjabi singer/actor Sippy Gill is one of them who likes to work on his own terms.
To talk about his upcoming Punjabi film Gadri Yodhe, which will trace the untold saga of martyr Mewa Singh’s life, Sippy was in Chandigarh on Tuesday along with director Paramjit Singh and writer of the film Prince Kanwaljit Singh.
Sippy will be playing lead role in the film. Proud about experimenting in terms of roles, he says, “When an actor gets to prove his versatility, it is a matter of achievement for him. In my three films so far, I have played different roles. As an I actor, I am trying to push my limits,” says Sippy. About playing Mewa Singh’s character in Gadri Yodhe, he shares, “Mewa Singh was a martyr who stood against injustice meted out by Indians in Canada. He shot W C Hopkinson, who was an immigration inspector in the Canadian Immigration Branch in Vancouver in the early 20th century.
“Because Mewa Singh shot Hopkinson for his ill-treatment towards Indians especially Punjabis , he also had to sacrifice his life,” adds Sippy. So, how is the actor gearing up to be in Mewa Singh’s shoes, and he explains, “I am excited to adapt his body language and his accent of that period. I will be undergoing workshops which will start within this weak only.”
Ask Gippy the kind of songs he prefers to sing, and he quips, “I believe if the artist cannot change with time, he cannot be successful. People keep asking why Punjabi songs are becoming more and more modern day-by-day, but I ask what’s bad in that? “If life is easy these days, people prefer light-hearted songs with simple lyrics, then why singers should not come up with such songs. “I like to sing more youth oriented songs,” says Sippy, who is soon coming up with his next Punjabi track.
Meanwhile, from an actor’s viewpoint, Sippy feels that people are bored of over dramatic action films. “I think the phase of over dramatic action is over now. People want more realism in films. So, I want to do films which show reality over drama,”concludes Sippy, who is open to doing comedy and romantic films. The shooting of Gadri Yodhe will start soon and the film will be shot in Rajasthan, Mumbai and Canada.
