The Punjab School Education department has started converting the primary and secondary government schools in to the smart schools under the new integrated scheme for education named Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, which was announced in the month of June 2018.
The conceptualization of the smart schools in the Punjab has been done under the guidance and directions of the Punjab’s School Education Secretary, Krishan Kumar. It is pertinent to mention that Punjab has decided to turn 2,800 government run primary and secondary schools in the state into smart schools in 2018-19. This project was brought on to the floor by education department in order to make the teaching-learning process easy and more effective for government school students which mostly belong to weaker section of society and to compete with the private schools also.The smart schools project includes 1,000 primary and 1,800 secondary ones, which will be equipped with laptops, multimedia projectors and high-speed internet at a cost of Rs 64 crore with joint funding from the Centre and the state governments.
The smart schools programme is among projects worth Rs 900 crore approved by the Project Approval Board of the Union human resource development (HRD) Ministry under new, integrated scheme for education, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. While Rs 50,000 have been approved for converting two classrooms in each of the 1,000 primary schools into smart classrooms, 1,800 senior secondary schools will get Rs 3 lakh each to make the teaching more interactive and improve creative thinking in learning process through integration of technology in education. Punjab’s School Education Secretary, Krishan Kumar informed that department have converted approximately more than fifty schools into smart schools in the Punjab, Initially the primary schools are being converted in to smart schools by making paintings on walls, putting quotations and poems on the wall etc which one can see in the school pictures below.The work on the secondary schools is also in the progress. Talking about its benefits, he informed that the use of exploratory learning will help students to learn with ease, besides improving their creativity, analytical ability and problem solving ability which otherwise they have to learn in theoretical way only.
They are trying to follow the foreign tradition of learning. Telling about the meaning and concept of a smart school, said that unlike the conventional school life, the smart school concept makes use of advanced technology and equipment in classrooms to give students a better learning experience.Teaching has moved to a really advanced level where the one sided lecture methods no more exists and students are having a more interactive learning experience. In it schools are also being beautified with meaningful paintings.
A basic smart classroom uses gadgets such as laptops, teaching screens and projectors to add a visual effect to learning. Smart school software is also becoming relevant nowadays which makes school operations more easy and productive.There are more than fifty schools like this in Punjab and the work in others is in progress.
