Gauri Lankesh, a senior journalist and well-known critic of the right wing forces in Bengaluru, has been shot dead at her residence in Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
“We learnt that the victim was shot dead from close range when she was standing at her house in Rajarajeswari Nagar around 8.00 p.m.,” a senior police officer said. Sources said Lankesh was followed by people in a car after she left her office in Basavanagudi at 7.30 pm.Gauri’s killing bears striking similarity to the way in which rationalist MM Kalburgi was killed two years ago.
Gauri Lankesh was the editor of weekly tabloid magazine Lankesh Patrike, columnist in newspapers, a panelist on TV channels besides being an activist.
Lankesh was critical of the Hindutva brigade and was last year convicted in a defamation case filed by MP Pralhad Joshi who had objected to a report against BJP leaders.Ms Lankesh had just reached home and was about to enter when unidentified men shot at the 55-year-old journalist seven times from close range; three bullets hit her on the neck and chest. Her body has been taken to the Victoria Hospital for a post-mortem.
Gauri was the elder daughter of P Lankesh – a man who brought in a new brand of Kannada journalism. She followed in his footsteps, speaking her mind and running her own Kannada paper with views that were never careful or circumspect. She was part of a group that worked for communal harmony. Her views were considered Leftist and anti-Hindutva.
