Chandigarh: Kiran Choudhry, Leader of the Haryana Congress Legislature Party, has said that demonetisation, especially the bar imposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the operations of district cooperative banks, has hit the farmers, reeling under huge losses inflicted on them by the policies and doings of the BJP Government, led by Manohar Lal, below the belt. She asked the state government to bail them out.
In a statement issued here today, the former excise and taxation minister said that lakh of farmers across the state had their accounts in the branches of district cooperative banks having deep penetration in the rural areas which suited the farmers. But now that these have been debarred by the RBI from carrying out any transactions in the wake of demonetisation, the farmers cannot deposit their proceeds from the sale of paddy which is in old currency, in their accounts. Neither can they draw money from their accounts as the bank cannot dish out old currency.
“Given this scenario, the farmers find themselves left in the lurch. This has hit them hard both ways. Those who have harvested the paddy crop and now want to sow wheat do not have money to buy seeds. And the others who are yet to clean up fields cannot hire labour for want of cash in new currency”, Choudhry pointed out.
She demanded that considering the pincer-like situation the farmers are caught in, the BJP Government should come to their rescue and facilitate them to sow the next crop. “Any delay in bailing them out is bound to affect wheat sowing which is already behind schedule”, she added.
