Kurukshetra: A large contingent of police has been deployed in village Bhusthala, in district Kurukshetra on Sunday following the tension prevailing there since Saturday night after the high caste people of the village prevented a boy from schedule caste from riding a horse for his marriage. According to police the tension gripped the village when people from Rajput and Balmik community clashed with each other when Rajputs objected to the ‘gurchari’(horse riding) ceremony of the Dalit boy. Rajputs stopped the Dalit family to ride a horse.
Sub-divisional Magistrate, Pehowa and a contingent of police rushed to the village and managed the Dalits to perform ‘gurchari’ around midnight. In the clash that ensued with stone throwing by the Rajputs, a few persons including a policeman were injured. Rajputs did not allow the Dalits to take the boy to enter any other temple except Ravidass temple. Suresh Kumar, Balmik, in a written complaint to the police at Jhansa police station alleged that a large number of Rajput youths objected when his son Sandeep was riding a horse driven cart as a part of ‘manda’ ceremony to visit temples. They demanded that Sandeep could go to their temple only walking and not riding horse. He further alleged that over two dozen youths lead by Block Samiti Member Tarsam Kumar warned them that if they tried to visit temple they will be murdered.
Balmiks were not in the village on Sunday as they had gone in a ‘barat’ to Yamunanager for solemnising the marriage. However, Dharampal, a relative of Dalit boy Sandeep, who could be contacted on mobile, told that over two dozen youths from Rajput community came to Sandeep’s house and threatened them with dire consequences if he rode a cart carried by horse to perform ‘gurchari’. They insisted that Virbhan must shun horse and walk to the Ravidass temple as only Rajputs can ride horse. He said that Dalits are feeling terrorised as Rajputs had issued warning to teach the Dalits a lesson on Sunday. Sarpanch of the village, Rajinder Singh, who is from Rajput community, said that some misguided youths from the village created the situation .
