The Chandigarh Model Jail, Burail has 17 HIV positive prisoners. Of about 800 screened in past two years, 17 were detected positive and have been given treatment at the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART).Sharing more details, Dr Vanita Gupta, Project Director, Chandigarh State Aids Control Society (CSACS), said, ” In 2017 the testing centre was established within the Model Jail, Burail, for the convenience of inmates to get tested and know their status. So Since then around 800 have been screened.”She said that every person who is under trail or is convicted gets the HIV test done and is put under treatment if found positive.
While, those who are tested positive includes both under trial and convicted. “Prior to the testing centre, a mobile van of CSACS was going once a fortnight to the jail premises . The CSACS staff was offering test to anyone who wanted. So the testing services in the jails were there but the testing facilities were later intensified in 2017 with the testing center,” Dr Vanita said.
Dr Vanita, who on Wednesday shared the details about the eight edition of AIDSCON – 8 said that the event will be organised in collaboration with Indian Medical Association on 15- 16 February 2019 at Dr P N Chhuttani Memorial IMA Complex, Sector 35-B, Chandigarh .The National Conference will have sessions where the outcomes of above strategies being implemented in different parts of the country would be deliberated upon.
