INTRODUCTION OF BILL WOULD DO AWAY WITH THE CURRENT SITUATION
Doctors under the Medicos Legal Action Group (MLAG) have insisted on the introduction of the Medical Injury Compensation Bill. The group has petitioned the Prime Minister to introduce the bill. Doctors have stressed that they are the only group which can be penalized in crores even if treatment has been provided free of cost, which has caused a lot of anguish and feeling of alienation among the medical community and has also led to the practice of defensive medicine and consequent increase in the cost of treatment. ” Doctors are the only professionals who have been unjustly and excessively targeted under the Consumer Protection Act. Doctors today being forced to differentiate between patients based on their economic status which is against fundamental rights of every citizen”, said Dr. Neeraj Nagpal, Managing Trustee of the group. As per the doctors, if introduced, the bill would do away with the current situation where one doctor has to defend himself for same incident before 4-5 different agencies, commissions/courts and boards. Dr Nagpal also asserted that doctors are being forced to differentiate between patients based on their economic status which is against the fundamental rights of citizens. The bill, if introduced, could redress the situation to a reasonable extent.
