In lieu of the ever-increasing patient inflow at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Jiyyo Referral Software, an app-based system is being practised to prevent nonlinear and inappropriate referral of patients to PGI. As per the information, the system at PGI will enable to receive proactive information about the patients being referred to it from other hospitals. Moreover, the rush of aftercare in the follow-up OPDs is also expected to see a dip through the backward referral system aided by the application. ” Also, the introduction of an e- counselling protocol for ge- netic/birth defect patients is in the pipeline”, said Dr InushaPanigrahi, Professor, Genetic Metabolic Unit, APC, PGIMER. In view of the patient inflow from small hospitals not only from the northern part of the country, but from all over the country, the system which is currently being observed at Advanced Paediatrics Centre (APC), is expected to avoid the wastage of time and efforts during a visit due to late referrals or unavailability of medical faculty at that time.
The decision was made on the basis of the view by the experts that many of the patients visiting PGI or other major hospitals, can be treated in small hospitals itself. Also, the delay due to back and forth referrals of the patients between hospitals leads to late treatment and wastage of time. Experts believe that the introduction of such ereferral networks will help in reducing distance between Primary, Secondary and Tertiary care centres. It will also help in ensuring the availability of expertise for carrying out after-discharge instructions, once the patient goes back to his/her native place after discharge from the hospital. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in 2017 between PGIMER and Jiyyo Innovations Pvt. Ltd. to serve the purpose of minimal non-linear and inappropriate referral of patients from small hospitals. Dr Jaishree Muralidharan, Professor, APC, PGIMER is the lead behind this idea and is working towards outlining the vision of App-based e-Referral Networks.
