Taking a tough stand, the state government on Thursday asked the private Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College (MMMC) authorities in Solan district to give admission to students against 50 per cent government quota seats which comes to 75 immediately or face action.
“We have conveyed it to the management of MMMC to give admission to the students as per counselling and the fees notified in the prospectus at the earliest. The government will take strict action in case of non-compliance by the college,” said Onkar Sharma, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare.
Sharma said the state government would take up the matter with Medical Council of India (MCI) as well. The Health Secretary had called a meeting with the college management on Thursday after the parents of the students, who were not being given admission in the college after counselling based on NEET merit had personally met Chief Secretary VC Pharka on Wednesday to air their grievance.
The session in all other medical colleges in the state had already started from September 13 but the MMMC had denied admission to the students in 50 per cent government quota seats in MBBS course. The college management is seeking a hike in the fee structure.
Parents of 32 students had submitted a representation to the Himachal Pradesh Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Commission also, as they held that the children were so depressed on being denied admission for no fault of theirs. Some of the students had got a call from other medical colleges in South also but they did not go and preferred MMMC in their home state. They have, however, been left in the lurch now because of the adamant attitude of the college management.
It is pertinent to mention that MMMC is already charging Rs 5 lakh per year for government quota seats which is ten times the fee charged by three government medical colleges. The college management is now asking for government permission for further fee hike.
The government has however turned down the request, saying that no alteration in the fee structure can be made after publishing the prospection and counselling, resulting in a deadlock as the college management was so far adamant on its demand.
The MMMC under the Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU) is set up in violation of the Act relevant to the establishment of private medical educational institutions, their admissions and fixation of the fee, as the Himachal Pradesh University is supposed to have exclusive powers to affiliate the private medical and dental colleges.
However, the previous government and now the present one have not exercised their powers to rein in the medical college. Instead, the MMMC, it is learnt, has been enjoying much patronage of officials and politicians in the previous and the present government.
