Mandi: Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee President, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA government for backtracking from the poll promise regarding doubling the income of farmers. He asked the Central government to implement the recommendation of Swaminathan Committee. Sukhu was addressing a public meeting at Drang under statewide campaign, ‘Modi ke Bol, Jumlon Ke Dhol’ in which Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur and other Congress leaders from Mandi were also present. The HPCC President would meet over 20,000 party workers during this campaign across the state.. Sukhu said that Modi government has ditched the farmers on the implementation of Swaminathan Committee report which had recommended that the prices of farm produce under the minimum support price (MSP) mechanism should be fixed ensuring 50 per cent profit over and above the cost of production. “The BJP in its party manifesto had said that after coming into power, BJP would take steps to enhance the profitability in agriculture, by ensuring a minimum of 50 per cent profits over the cost of production, cheaper agriculture inputs and credit as recommended by Swaminathan Committee,” he said.
The state Congress President said that Modi government, in an affidavit submitted in the Supreme Court had stated that it would not be able to enhance the minimum support price for agricultural produce to be 50 per cent more than the cost of input. “This stand has to be seen in the context of the promise made by the party in its manifesto. With Modi government virtually backtracking on almost every issue, the commitment of the party to full other poll promises has come under the shadow,” he said, adding that like other promises, this promise had also proved to be a ‘Chunavi Jumla’. He said it seemed that the Modi made promises were made to mislead the general public and gain power as neither the Modi government had fulfilled any of these promises nor had replied to opposition parties’ queries as to what steps are being taken by the Central government to fulfil these promises.
