Executive Committee of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association has held a meeting in which issue pertaining to elevation of judges was discussed. Secretary of the Bar Association Baltej Singh Sidhu apprised of the Executive Committee that the Collegium of the Supreme Court ignored the seniority of the High Court judges with regard to elevation to the Supreme Court. He said that it was a very serious issue and must be considered by the Executive Committee.
The committee after discussing the issue for long unanimously decided that revisiting of earlier decisions of December 12, 2018 by the Collegium of the Supreme Court without disclosing reason is a ‘threat to impartiality, integrity and independence of judiciary.’
The Executive Committee is of the considered view that inter-se seniority of the High Court judges should not be interfered into except in exceptional circumstances. The committee said that a copy of this resolution of the committee in this regard will be sent to the President of India, Prime Minister and the Union Law Minister.
