President Trump has offered the post of United States ambassador to Germany to Richard Grenell, a former diplomatic aide to President George W. Bush and a Republican strategist who once worked for Senator John McCain, two people briefed on the conversation said on Thursday.
Mr. Trump made the offer last week at the White House during a visit by Mr. Grenell, who agreed to take the job if confirmed, the people briefed on the matter said. Mr. Grenell, who was the longest-serving American spokesman at the United Nations, had quietly helped with Mr. Trump’s transition process.
If confirmed, Mr. Grenell, a frequent commentator on Fox News and a vocal critic of the news media on Twitter, would be the first openly gay appointee in the Trump administration.
A White House spokeswoman and a State Department spokesman did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday. The job of envoy to Germany, one of America’s most important European allies, has for years been filled by career diplomats, such as Richard C. Holbrooke.
