The seventh Khushwant Singh Literary Festival (KSLF) kicks off today, October 12, 2018 at the the Kasauli Club and will conclude on October 14. The KSLF will combine the passions and concerns of late writer, Khushwant Singh, who did much of his work in Kasauli. This year’s overriding theme is a topical one: “Strength of a Naan – The Roe of Women in an Age of *Me Too’: The KSLF will also be infused with the bon vivant spirit, irreverence and infectious humour that characterised the writings of Khushwant Singh.Since Kasauli is in an extremely fragile ecological zone, the preservation of our environment and of our heritage – man-made and natural – has been a recurring theme of our Infests. This year the focus is on water. Light will also be thrown on some hidden treasures of the Himalaya, Kasauli being a cantonment town, t h e m i l i t a r y naturally figures prominently in all our litfests, with spice added this year in the form of a discussion on a controversial best-selling book by two former spy chiefs of India and Pakistan. We will also look back on somebody who defined
in many ways Islamabad’s view of New Delhi – Zulfigar Alt Bhutto. The question, ‘Is Miran }Chan good for India’ will also be taken up. But, 2018 has truly been the Year of Women, with the Supreme Court passing bold judgments on triple talaaq, adultery and the opening up of a male-only temple to women. That women’s rights are indeed human rights will be highlighted the KSLF, while women achievers from the past and present will be lauded. The shameful neglect of our brethren in th north-east will also be addressed, though signs are now evident that they are coming more into the Indian mainstream Finally, we have an
addition that Khushwant Singh would have heartily endorsed: A session on food and drink, with particular emphasis on native preparations, both traditional and new. This year’s speakers include: Karan Thapar, Shashi Tharoor, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Gurchuan Das, Prem Shankar Jha, Shankar Aiyarjairam Ramesh, Salman Khurshid, A S Dulat, Syeda Hameed, Maja Daruwala, Saeed Mirza, Wendell Rodricks, General Ata Hasnain, General Kamal Davar, Divya Dutta, Naman Ahuja, Nirupama Dun, Robin Gupta, Kishwar Desal, Desmond Nazareth.
