There are five prisons in Canada. The largest prison is in Kitchener, Ontario, where there are 220 women In currently, 168 women are facing the punishment, which has been punished after the murder/accused of murder, loot, beat, cheating, drug trafficking etc. It has been found that there are more than half-a-dozen Punjabi females in the ‘Kitchener’ Jail from various countries.
Poonam Lit, who was brutally assaulted and murdered by her sister-in-law Mandeep Lit at a flat in Brampton on February 2009, Mandeep is being imprisoned in a jail. Bhupinder Singh Gill (41) and his partner Gurpreet Kaur (38) were convicted in the murder case of Jagtar Kaur Gill, mother of three children murdered in the capital, Ottawa on January 29, 2014. In July 2016, Gurpreet and Bhupinder were found guilty of first degree murder. Both of them were sentenced to life imprisonment for 25 years .Gurpreet Ronald is locked in a women’s prison in Kitchener.
The journalist had an opportunity to meet the officials in jail and to know the difficulties of the prisoners in the barracks. In prison, 208 staff members are active in 3 shifts for 168 prisoners among them are 9 psychologists whose work is to set the condition of the prisoners.
He said that prisoners often suffer from mental agony before coming to jail, so they are difficult to adjust to jail circumstances. An official said that 16 percent of the life sentence is for life imprisonment and 38 percent of the sentence is of 2 or 3 years.
The problems of Punjabi prisoners are different from the others. A prisoner (her name can not be told) said that Punjabi food and spicy lentils and vegetables are not given. He candidly said that Sikh and Hindu prisoners are not allowed to eat their own food, whereas there is no such restriction on Muslim prisoners. He also told that it is not allowed to cover head with scarf.
The prisoners get an open opportunity to convey their message by writing to the prison officials and after giving written requests, the facility is granted. The jail warden clarified that the question of discrimination with Hindu and Sikh prisoners cannot be raised in the jail nor the Muslims have more facilities than others. He said that according to the rules, the convenience of religious arrangements are given to each prisoner.
