The civic bodies in New Delhi plan to make a draft for mechanized cleaning of sewers and drains. The related report has been submitted to the Delhi lieutenant governor of Delhi. The equipment for this will cost around Rs 3,000 crore.
The civil agencies have proposed to procure 90 super-suction machines, 20 suctioncum-jetting machines and 20 suction machines, among other equipment. The tendering process will start only once the action plan is approved; approval is expected to take at least a few months.
Senior engineering department officials explained that the problem lies with narrower sewers and drains that cannot be accessed by big suction machines. “Four three-wheeler mounted, smaller sewer-manhole desilting machines were hired to test their usefulness. It was a decided to procure 50 such machines,” they said.
