Biopics have been a successful funda for Bollywood in the last half decade, and seems like the trend has touched Punjabi film industry as well.
Makers are all set to showcase the life of the popular stage performer and singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, famously known as Chamkila who ruled the Punjabi music scene in the 80s. The film titled Amar Chimkala was unveiled through a poster launch in Chandigarh on Friday.
“Chamkila was unique, and played a significant role in the uprising of Punjabi music. This film would be a much needed tribute to his life,” says, Indi Billing, the producer of the film who was present at the launch.
The late singer rose to fame through his phenomenal stage presence, and his coming-of-age songs. His track, ‘Pehla lalakare naal’ which was a duet with his wife Amarjot Chamkila, is already a cult classic amongst the fans. On the other hand, the singer also engrossed controversies throughout his career and his mysteries death still remains a question. Chamkila’s son, Jaiman Chamkila says that there are so many aspects of his father’s life that would be unfolded in this film.
“Some people call him a legend, and some still question his achievements. But I want to show his life beyond music. My father gave Punjab a lot more than just music,” he adds.
Though, there were several rumors in the past of other biopics regarding Chamkila, but Jaiman shuns them off and says, “My loyalty is towards my film only. I can’t bet on what those film will showcase…but Amar Chamkila will be the real deal.” Gurjand Maan, the lead actor of the film reveals that this film could make, or either break his career. “Except few his songs I had no idea about Chamkila’s life. This film would be the most important film of my career,” says the actor who debuted last year in Once Upon A Time in Amritsar. Amar Chamkila is predicted to release in August this year. It would be shot in Punjab widely and Jaiman Chamkila will contribute as a playback singer for this film.
