The Multi tasking Super woman by Dr. Ashwani K. Malhotra.
The alarm on her mobile rings and the 38 year old woman glances at the time, it’s 5.00 in the morning and she grudgingly gets up . Another grueling day , she muses as she prepares breakfast and lunch for her old in-laws, husband and the two college going children and packs a tiffin for herself, washes clothes and tidies the house, grabs a bite of a leftover overnight parantha in between and gets ready for the bumpy 2 hour bus ride to work, bracing herself , her head held high as she wards of the sarcastic remarks and stares of the lecherous men in silence, who even don’t have the decency to offer a woman a seat. The journey back home is equally tortuous and by the time she enters the bedroom it’s past 11 and by the time her head hits the pillow she is already sleep !
She is one of the millions of women who work and tend the home with equal efficiency, unflinchingly, and in the process some like her, at times face the threat of molestation by pawing hands while she commutes to work and harassment and discrimination at every step in the office. And in the process she is taken for granted by almost everyone, rarely acknowledged and at times beaten black and blue by a drunken husband, or burnt to death for dowry by greedy in-laws , is supposed to bear a son, a heir to family and bow to the whims and fancies and obey the commands of the men in the family
Though, times are changing, with more awareness among families as they acknowledge the contribution of women towards the family and society, Governments working towards women’s rights and gender sensitization, NGO’s coming to the aid of distressed women , Rural and Urban activists transforming woman’s lives, yet statistics and surveys indicate that it will be many many more years before women will be more educated, healthier and independent than they are today. As we celebrate International Woman’s Day , let us remind ourselves that a woman can perform all the duties of a man but a a man cannot do all that a woman can do, for the day belongs to the multitasking superwoman.
