Valmiki Jayanti 2017: Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the first poet or Adi Kavi in Sanskrit Literature. This year Valmiki Jayanti will be celebrated on October 5, 2017. Adi Kavi Maharishi Valmiki wrote the greatest epic poem Ramayana.
History and significance of Valmiki Jayanti
According to Ramayana, Lord Rama met Maharishi Valmiki during his exile and Rishi Valmiki also gave shelter to Lord Rama’s wife Sita. When Sita was banished by Lord Rama, Rishi Valmiki came to her rescue and she gave birth to Lord Rama’s twin sons, Lava and Kusha. During their childhood, it was Rishi Valmiki who taught them Ramayana.Valmiki was the tenth son of a Brahmin named Pracheta and is of Bhrigu gotra. It is believed that in his previous life the sage was a highway dacoit named Ratnakara and used to kill and rob people.
A chance encounter with Narada Muni changed his life forever and he became a great devotee of Lord Rama. During his severe penance huge anthills formed around him which earned him the name of Valmiki.According to Hindu mythology, Valmiki was a highway dacoit in his early life. It is believed that sage Narada Muni transformed Ratnakar into great devotee of Lord Rama. He performed great penance by reciting ‘Rama Nama’. After years of meditation, a divine voice bestowed him with new name Valmiki, the one who born out of ant-hills.Celebration of Valmiki Jayanti
The birth anniversary of great Sanskrit poet is also referred to as Pragat Diwas and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Hindu devotees. People worship Maharishi Valmiki and celebrate this day with great processions or shobha yatras and meetings. Devotees also offer free food to people and recite prayers in honour to celebrate Valmiki Jayanti. People also decorate Maharishi Valmiki‘s temples with flowers and light the temples. The whole atmosphere gets filled with purity and happiness.
