Tamil nadu heavy rains: Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu have caused 12 deaths and closure of educational institutions. 10,000 people have been forced to take shelter in over 100 relief camps set up in Chennai and other parts of coastal Tamil Nadu after the northeast monsoon intensified, the state government said. Due to the continuous rain, schools and colleges in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Pudukottai and Nagapattiman districts of Tamil Nadu remained closed. The weather department has predicted more rains for the coastal districts of the state. According to the weather forecast, 74 per cent of rain was recorded in just the first week since the northeast monsoon arrived. Between Thursday evening and Friday morning, parts of Chennai received as much as 140 mm of rain.Chennai was lashed out by rains on Thursday evening. It continued till Saturday morning. Several places in the city were submerged and traffic was thrown out of gear. As a precautionary measure on Thursday the power supply in the city was cut. It was restored back on Friday. Most of the water-logging has been cleared in Chennai, low-lying areas and the suburbs of the capital continue to be water-logged.
