Nearly 8 lakh doctors across the country will be fasting for one day on Monday, tomorrow. Celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday as a Non-Violence Day, the doctors are expressing their resentment against the central government. In an organised press conference in Press club, Chandigarh, Dr. RS Bedi, Chairman of the Action Committee of Indian Medical Association and other associated organizations, informed that doctors from all over the country will not eat anything from 6 am to 6 pm. The decision of the doctors is to remind the Union government that their demands are not being considered. If the eyes of the government are not opened then the doctor will go on an indefinite strike, further.Doctors are demanding that the recommendations of the Inter-Ministerial Committee of 5 different Union departments, formed for consideration of the demands of doctors should be implemented, while the same were recommended by the Union Health Ministry. Among these demands, there are to stop the criminal prosecution of medical negligence and clerical errors, stringent central act against violence on doctors, professional autonomy in treatment and prescriptions, more budgets for health services etc.This movement of doctors has been going on for three years. Their demand is that there should no excesses on doctors on the name of law. Dr.Neeraj Nagpal, former president of Indian Medical Association, Chandigarh, told that more than 70 doctors in the Punjab have been prosecuted in last 4 years for minor procedural lapses like incomplete forms, not under PNDT act, not holding name plate or apron.Dr. Nagpal revealed that even as per the information sought by RTI, only 4 cases were according to the guide line.Whereas an average of one doctor is being booked in criminal case, daily. Although there is an act ‘violation against the doctors’, but no single case has been registered in Punjab over the last 6 years in the violence against doctors in Punjab. Doctor Bedi said that Doctors from various states and union territories will gather in their offices of association respectively and will be fasting from morning 6 am to evening 6.There are 1500 doctors in Chandigarh, who will participate in fasting and the number of doctors in tricity (Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula) is 4,000. The number of IMA doctors in Punjab is 7500. The number of member doctors of India Medical Association (IMA) in the country is 2.51 lakh. Apart from this, there are some Sub-committees of the Association include student wing, which have membership more than three lacs and other category of doctors like radiologist etc. have members more than 2.5 lacs, who will go on fasting , tomorrow.
