He may be considered a ‘Hero’ by millions of Indians but he is still a militant with socialist objectives for Union Ministry of Culture and Human Resource Development.A controversy has been kicked off after Bhagat Singh was termed as a militant in a dictionary being prepared by the union government on freedom fighters. The goof up made by the government came to the light when an RTI was sought on whether Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev have been granted the status of martyr.A project to prepare a dictionary, on revolutionaries and freedom fighters who died while fighting for the freedom of their nation, was undertaken by Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) that is a branch of HRD Ministry. The project was however overseen by the Ministry of Culture. The dictionary included those freedom fighters who had died from 1857 to 1947.“In 1925, Bhagat Singh joined the secret revolutionary party- the Hindustan Republican Association. While studying in National College, Lahore Bhagat Singh initiated a study circle in 1926 with the help of Bhagwati Charan Vohra and Sukhdev. In due course it grew into a radical youth organization that Bhagat Singh, Bhagwati Charan and Sukhdev founded in 1926 under the name Naujawan Bharat Sabha” the dictionary on freedom fighter states. It further states that Sabha soon became a powerful instrument of youthful militancy with a socialist objective. Rohit Choudhary a resident of Jammu had filed an RTI asking whether the status of a martyr granted to the trio who were hanged to death by the British after a contoversial trial on March 23, 1931.However the reply by ICHR stated that it does not have any information regarding the martyr status to the three freedom fighters. The issue has evoked sharp criticism of the central government by the kin of freedom fighters. President of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust, Ashok Thapar who is based in Ludhiana said that terming Bhagat Singh or any other freedom fighter as a “militant” is raising questions on the entire freedom struggle that witnessed bloodshed of thousands of Indians. “The error should be rectified immediately by the concerned department” said Thapar.
