Bodo student murder case: The Centre has handed over the case of the killing of All Bodo Minority Students Union (ABMSU) president Lafikul Islam to the CBI, an official release has said. The move follows a request from the Assam government to the Centre.A notification was issued in this regard by the central government yesterday, the state government said in a release. ABMSU president Lafikul Islam was killed by unidentified miscreants at Titaguri market in Kokrajhar district on August 1 this year.Kokrajhar district superintendent of police Rajen Singh chose not to answer calls, but lesser police officers said Ahmed’s killing could be an attempt by tribal extremists to keep the area on boil. The extremists were behind a series of violence against minorities in Kokrajhar, the hub of Bodoland Territorial Council.“Ahmed was shot about 4:30 pm at Titaguri. We are trying to follow clues to get to the culprits,” a police officer in Kokrajhar said. Organisations such as the Muslim Kalyan Parishad, Assam and All Assam Bengali Yuba Chhatra Federation condemned Ahmed’s killing. CBI to take over Bodo student murder case.“There is a design behind Lafiqul’s murder. The (BJP-led coalition) government should take steps to ensure this does not snowball into a major law and order problem,” Sultan Mahmud Mirdha, spokesperson for a minority literary organisation, said. The Assam government had constituted a special investigation team (SIT) headed by Inspector General of Police Anurag Tankha to inquire into the murder, and had provided ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the slain ABMSU leader.
