Violence erupted at Sathyabama University in Chennai on Wednesday night after a first-year student, who was allegedly caught cheating during an examination, committed suicide. Police and Sathyabama University college authorities claimed that a section of students, upset over the death of fellow student, was involved in arson on the university campus Wednesday. The students went on a rampage over the suicide of a first year girl, who was “caught during exam malpractice,” they said.Protests that began against her death turned violent with students turning to arson. They set fire to property at a hostel building and damaged lights and electrical accessories, the college authorities have stated. Over 300 students were reportedly involved in the act. Around 200 police personnel are present at the university campus to bring the situation back to normalcy.
Meanwhile, the victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem. The student, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh, allegedly killed herself in her hostel room after she was sent out of the examination hall.
